Description

The Verus Engineering Anti-Buffeting Wind Deflectors for the Mk5 Toyota Supra are designed to eliminate the notorious wind buffeting that occurs when driving with the windows down. At higher speeds, airflow around the A-pillar can create intense pressure waves inside the cabin, making it uncomfortable or even unbearable to keep the windows open.

Verus Engineering developed these carbon wind deflectors to address the issue while also adding a clean, performance-focused exterior upgrade. The deflectors alter the airflow around the side windows to reduce the pressure fluctuations responsible for the buffeting effect.

Each wind deflector is constructed from multiple pieces of 2x2 twill 3K pre-preg carbon fiber, bonded together and autoclave cured before receiving a high-gloss automotive clear coat. The two-piece construction is designed to provide an accurate fit and high-quality finish around the factory side mirror bases.

During development, Verus Engineering used in-house scan data from the Mk5 Toyota Supra to accurately contour the deflectors around the side mirror bases. CFD analysis was also used to verify their effectiveness while minimizing unnecessary drag and avoiding negative interactions with other aerodynamic components downstream.

The result is a simple aerodynamic solution that reduces wind buffeting while enhancing the exterior appearance of the Mk5 Toyota Supra.

What Causes Mk5 Supra Wind Buffeting?

The notorious wind buffeting experienced in the Mk5 Toyota Supra with the windows down is caused by airflow interacting with the vehicle's A-pillars and side windows.

As airflow travels around the A-pillar, it can repeatedly attach and detach from the surrounding surfaces. With the windows open, this unstable airflow creates pressure waves that propagate into the cabin, producing the loud, low-frequency buffeting effect experienced at higher speeds.

The Verus Engineering Anti-Buffeting Wind Deflectors alter this airflow behavior by encouraging the airflow to detach as it travels around the windows. This reduces the conditions that create the pressure waves responsible for the unwanted cabin noise.

Aerodynamic Development

Verus Engineering developed the wind deflectors using in-house scan data from the Mk5 Toyota Supra to ensure accurate contouring around the side mirror bases.

CFD analysis was then used to evaluate the airflow around the deflectors and confirm that they address the buffeting issue without creating unnecessary aerodynamic drag or negatively interacting with other aerodynamic components further downstream.

This allows the wind deflectors to solve the cabin buffeting issue while maintaining compatibility with the vehicle's overall aerodynamic behavior.

Installation

The Verus Engineering Anti-Buffeting Wind Deflectors use 3M VHB double-sided tape for a simple installation. The kit includes the left- and right-hand carbon deflectors along with the required adhesive.

Verus Engineering also provides installation videos and detailed installation manuals for its products to assist with the installation process.
