Description

The Verus Engineering High-Efficiency Rear Wing Kit for the Mazda MX-5 Miata ND is designed to provide significant rear downforce while maintaining excellent aerodynamic efficiency. Developed from a clean-sheet design approach, Verus Engineering created its own airfoil profile using the ANSYS Adjoint Solver to produce a rear wing optimized for track performance without unnecessarily sacrificing straight-line speed or street fuel economy.

The wing uses a swan neck mounting design that positions the supports above the wing element, allowing cleaner airflow across the underside of the airfoil compared with conventional bottom-mounted rear wings. This improves aerodynamic efficiency and allows the wing to generate meaningful downforce while keeping drag relatively low.

The low-drag characteristics of this rear wing make it particularly well suited to the ND Miata chassis, where maintaining straight-line performance is important due to the vehicle's limited stock horsepower. By increasing rear-end downforce, the wing can help improve cornering speeds, high-speed stability, and driver confidence without creating a substantial penalty in top speed or street fuel economy.

Verus Engineering positioned the wing mounts at strong locations on the factory trunk and reinforced the mounting system to help manage the aerodynamic loads generated by the wing. The machined aluminum uprights were optimized using CFD and FEA for efficient airflow in both straight-line and yaw conditions while maintaining the structural strength necessary to support the wing.

The rear wing is designed to generate and withstand 300+ lbs of downforce and is properly sized to work with a wide range of off-the-shelf front aerodynamic components, making it a versatile addition to an ND Miata track or street aero setup.

Engineering & Aerodynamic Design

The Verus Engineering High-Efficiency Rear Wing was developed specifically for the ND Miata enthusiast who wants additional rear-end downforce without significantly compromising straight-line performance. The airfoil was developed using the ANSYS Adjoint Solver and further refined through CFD analysis and real-world testing.

The swan neck mounting configuration feeds cleaner airflow to the underside of the wing, improving the wing's efficiency compared with traditional bottom-mounted designs. The mounting locations were selected based on the strongest areas of the factory trunk and reinforced to help manage the forces generated by the wing.

The wing uprights were optimized using both CFD and FEA to provide efficient airflow during straight-line driving and yaw conditions while maintaining the strength required to withstand the aerodynamic loads.

Verus Engineering's CFD results were validated through real-world testing, with the development process focused on achieving significant rear downforce, reduced drag, and an aerodynamic package that remains appropriate for the ND Miata's power level.
