Description

The IPD Competition 82mm Intake Plenum for the Porsche 987.1 Cayman is a high-performance airflow upgrade engineered to unlock the full potential of Porsche’s mid-engine platform, including both 2.7L and 3.4L models from 2006–2008. The Cayman is widely regarded as a perfectly balanced mid-engine chassis built for canyon and track performance, but it was originally delivered with conservative factory power levels.

The IPD intake plenum addresses this limitation by significantly improving airflow efficiency and engine breathing, delivering performance gains that bring the Cayman closer to Carrera-level performance.

Unlike factory Porsche air distribution systems that use a “T-style” design with restricted airflow characteristics, the IPD system utilizes a patented “Y-design” plenum architecture. This optimized airflow path improves air speed, reduces restriction, and enhances volumetric efficiency throughout the entire RPM range.

The Competition version is the most aggressive configuration in the IPD Cayman lineup. It is engineered specifically for enthusiasts who demand maximum naturally aspirated performance and utilizes the larger Porsche 997 GT3 82mm throttle body to further increase airflow capacity and power potential.

This design delivers strong, noticeable gains across the entire power band, with the most significant improvements occurring in the mid-range and upper RPM range. While the system is compatible with stock vehicles, it produces even greater performance gains when paired with supporting modifications such as high-flow cat-back exhaust systems and other performance upgrades.

82mm Competition Throttle Body Upgrade:

The IPD 987.1 Competition Plenum is engineered to work with the Porsche 997 GT3 82mm throttle body.

Compared to smaller factory throttle bodies, the 82mm unit significantly increases airflow capacity, reduces intake restriction, and improves high-RPM engine performance. This setup is widely used by enthusiasts seeking maximum naturally aspirated gains from the 987.1 Cayman platform.

Note: Porsche 997 GT3 82mm throttle body is required and sold separately.

IPD Y-Design Intake Technology:

The IPD patented Y-design is the core innovation behind the Competition Plenum.

Unlike traditional factory “T-style” intake distribution systems, the Y-design improves airflow separation and distribution, reducing turbulence and increasing intake velocity. This results in improved engine efficiency and stronger, more consistent power delivery.

Benefits include improved airflow speed, reduced restriction, better cylinder filling, and enhanced performance across the RPM range.

Performance Gains:

The IPD Competition 82mm Intake Plenum delivers significant horsepower gains across the entire power band.

The most noticeable improvements occur in the mid-range and upper RPM regions, where naturally aspirated engines benefit most from optimized airflow.

On properly equipped vehicles, including those with high-flow cat-back exhaust systems, gains of 20+ horsepower are achievable. Additional supporting modifications can further enhance performance results.

The result is a more aggressive, responsive, and engaging driving experience that transforms the Cayman platform.

Installation:

The IPD Competition Plenum is a direct bolt-on upgrade designed for straightforward installation.

It requires no permanent modifications and is compatible with factory mounting points. Professional installation by a qualified Porsche technician is recommended for optimal performance and reliability.
