Design & Development
When it comes to Volkswagen Golf intake design, intake temperatures are one of the most important factors.
The majority of intake systems on the market are open designs that allow high-temperature engine bay air to enter the intake system. This can have two significant negative effects on performance.
The first and most commonly understood effect is that hotter engine bay air is less dense and contains less oxygen, which naturally produces less power.
The second effect is less well understood. The ECU detects higher intake air temperatures and can adjust its temperature compensation tables. These adjustments can reduce ignition timing, which can have a significant effect on power output, throttle response, and target boost.
This effect is often not clearly seen during dyno testing of open intake systems because many tests are performed with the vehicle bonnet open.
The Infinity Design intake is fully sealed using frontal inlet air duct housings. The system has been meticulously designed to allow maximum airflow while creating an effective seal that keeps intake air temperatures at their lowest point at all times, supporting the best possible performance.
The intake tube consists of a single Venturi tube designed to smooth the airflow. This smoother airflow improves throttle response and can increase horsepower and torque. The less effort the engine has to use to draw in air, the more power it can potentially generate.
This design also allows for faster turbocharger spool-up times.
High-Flow Air Filter & Intake Temperatures
The Infinity Design intake uses a bespoke short-stack, high-surface-area air filter that is larger than any cone filter design currently offered on the market.
The filter features a huge 170 mm (6 3/4") opening and is designed to take full advantage of the intake tube by altering the direction of airflow toward the outer walls.
By positioning the air filter in front of the inlet tube, the system achieves the largest possible velocity stack, optimizing the airflow entering the intake system.
Performance Testing
On-road testing of a stock vehicle demonstrated noticeable and measurable differences in performance and throttle response.
Dyno results also showed a positive and measurable performance difference. Dyno graphs are to be posted.
