Description

Upgrade the intake system on your BMW E92 M3 with the Infinity Design E92 M3 Intake, engineered around a complete redesign of the factory airbox and intake path. Rather than simply increasing the size of the factory intake elbow, Infinity Design developed a significantly larger and more efficient inlet system designed to maintain and increase the cross-sectional area from the plenum opening through to the high-flow air filter.

The result is a high-volume intake system designed to allow the S65 engine to take in air closer to its maximum capacity, particularly at higher RPM when airflow demand increases.

Complete Airbox and Inlet Redesign

For the E92 M3 application, Infinity Design completely redesigned the entire airbox to accommodate a substantially larger intake tube.

The factory intake elbow reduces considerably in size from the plenum opening to the airbox. Simply increasing the size or smoothing the inlet elbow has become common practice with many intake systems, but this typically produces little to no measurable power increase. The effect on airflow remains minimal when the air still has to pass through the restrictive and relatively small area within the OEM airbox.

Infinity Design's strategy was to develop an inlet tube that maintains a consistent cross-sectional area at the plenum opening while also enlarging the overall intake path. Accomplishing this required a complete redesign of the airbox to allow the substantially larger tube to pass through it.

The resulting inlet tube has significantly greater volume and cross-sectional area, with its size gradually increasing as it approaches the large-surface-area air filter.

This design allows the plenum to take in air closer to its maximum capacity because the cross-sectional area remains consistent and progressively increases through the intake system.

The redesigned system also provides a dramatically larger opening to the air filter compared with the OEM intake system.

High-Flow Air Filter and Intake Temperatures

The Infinity Design intake uses a bespoke short-stack, high-surface-area air filter that is larger than conventional cone-filter designs currently offered on the market.

The filter features a huge 170mm (6 3/4") opening and is designed to take full advantage of the enlarged intake tubes by altering the direction of airflow toward the outer walls.

By positioning the air filter directly in front of the inlet tube, the design achieves an extremely large velocity stack, helping maximize the available intake area and airflow potential.

Performance Testing

Dyno testing was performed under strictly controlled conditions on an independent Dyno Dynamics machine to provide a realistic representation of the intake's performance.

The test vehicle was a completely stock 2012 BMW E92 M3 equipped with a DCT transmission and showing 62,000 miles.

Testing demonstrated a healthy and genuine increase of:

  • 10-12 hp from 6000-8300 rpm
  • 8-10 lb-ft from 6000-8300 rpm

The results shown compare the highest stock result against the highest result achieved with the Infinity Design intake.

The shape of the stock dyno run is smooth, and the power does not fall off at high RPM. The stock vehicle reaches its peak power at the factory 8300 RPM redline.

Many intake manufacturers may use stock dyno runs taken early in a testing session when intake air temperatures are high. Elevated intake temperatures can cause the ECU to retard ignition timing, resulting in a dyno graph that does not represent the engine's natural power curve and may flatten at high RPM.

More importantly, the upgraded airbox dyno graph does not show a torque curve with an inconsistent gain across the RPM range. This type of dyno result can indicate that a correction factor has been used to display an artificial gain.

The testing performed by Infinity Design demonstrates a realistic result. The torque curve is almost identical to the OEM setup at low RPM and only begins to show gains after approximately 4000 RPM, with the most significant gains occurring after 6000 RPM when engine airflow demand is substantially higher.

On modified vehicles equipped with exhaust systems that delete the highly restrictive primary catalytic converters, similar or potentially greater results may be achieved.
