The stock configuration features a basic air box with a standard panel filter and an intake resonator designed to mute the turbo/intake sounds that performance enthusiasts enjoy. This results in an uninspiring air box that, while functional, lacks visual appeal and performance-enhancing sound.
The Dinan carbon fiber intake transforms the 230i/330i by addressing these shortcomings. This semi-open intake flows 58% more air than the stock system, enhancing throttle response and removing restrictions that could impede high-powered builds involving upgraded turbos and fueling systems. The Dinan kit also introduces a more aggressive, sporty carbon fiber look and an increase in sound due to the removal of the intake resonator and the semi-open design.
To achieve this performance boost, Dinan redesigned and enlarged the entire lower air box, maximizing the available space within the engine bay. This allows for a custom, free-flowing filter that is 40% larger than the stock filter, ensuring maximum airflow. Dinan also incorporated a secondary inlet to complement the enlarged air box and increased filter surface area. Through extensive testing, they determined the optimal design for this secondary inlet, ensuring it does not increase air temperatures within the system. The final design features patterned openings that balance additional volume without raising turbo inlet temperatures, regardless of testing conditions.
While this increased airflow does not significantly boost power in stock or lightly modified vehicles, it raises the potential power ceiling for those pursuing more extensive modifications. The Dinan intake system ensures that the intake is not a limiting factor in achieving higher performance. Additionally, the secondary air inlets make the intake system more audible, allowing enthusiasts to enjoy the sound of the turbo spool and blow-off valve.
