With the valves closed, the system is designed to provide a more comfortable and refined driving experience. When the valves are opened, the exhaust produces a more pronounced and sporty sound, allowing you to enjoy a more aggressive exhaust character when accelerating.
Equal Length & Single Midpipe Hybrid Design
The S55 engine's traditional exhaust configuration can produce a distinctive uneven or "two-three-cylinder" exhaust character. This is related to the unequal exhaust runner lengths between the two banks before the exhaust gases are combined.
The equal-length section addresses this by balancing the exhaust path lengths before the exhaust streams are mixed. This helps produce a smoother and higher-pitched exhaust note, giving the S55 a sound character more reminiscent of a traditional high-revving straight-six engine.
However, conventional equal-length exhaust systems can sometimes introduce unwanted rasp, particularly around the 2,000–2,500 RPM range, depending on the exhaust configuration.
Integrated Resonators
To help control unwanted rasp and harsh frequencies, the DCE Parts hybrid system incorporates resonators within the equal-length section. These resonators are designed to refine the exhaust tone while maintaining the desired higher-pitched character.
The result is a more controlled exhaust note that aims to retain the exciting high-frequency characteristics of the S55 without excessive raspiness.
Single Midpipe Section
The system then incorporates a large 2-into-1 single midpipe, allowing both exhaust banks to merge through a shared midpipe section.
The single midpipe configuration is designed to introduce deeper and fuller lower-frequency tones into the exhaust note. Combined with the equal-length section, this creates a hybrid sound profile that balances the higher-pitched characteristics of an equal-length system with the deeper tone associated with a single midpipe.
Titanium Construction

On BMW M models, the system can allow the original factory valves to be reused, depending on the specific setup.

With the valves closed, the exhaust is designed to provide a more subdued and comfortable sound for normal driving and highway cruising. Opening the valves provides a more aggressive exhaust note and increased sound under acceleration.
