Performance & Exhaust Sound
The SOUL Performance Exhaust System is engineered to deliver a substantial improvement in exhaust flow efficiency and turbocharged engine response. By removing the factory GPF filters, upgrading to custom high-flow SOUL catalytic converters, and increasing the exhaust diameter, SOUL significantly improves the system's ability to support maximum performance.
Independent dyno testing conducted at Vollux Autowerks on SOUL's development vehicle with hardware-only modifications revealed maximum gains exceeding 100 ft-lbs of torque at 2,500 RPM, along with approximately 55 wheel horsepower and 45 ft-lbs of torque at 6,300 RPM when running 93-octane pump gasoline.
Thanks to the Porsche eTurbo T-Hybrid system, these improvements are experienced with exceptionally quick response, delivering power as though the engine has gained additional displacement. However, midrange gains on factory tuning are limited by Porsche's torque-management programming. SOUL's tuning partner, M-Engineering, has achieved impressive power gains throughout the entire powerband during aftermarket software development.
The optimized XY-pipe design also plays a critical role in refining exhaust sound. By controlling the amount of exhaust flow shared between both banks through a specially engineered central chamber, the system eliminates the harsh, tractor-like sound associated with separated exhaust banks and improves upon the sound characteristics of a traditional X-pipe.
The resulting exhaust note is smoother, more refined, higher-pitched, and more aggressive without introducing excessive rasp or harshness.
Inside the cabin, the integrated Helmholtz anti-drone chambers target unwanted frequencies between approximately 2,000 and 2,500 RPM, helping maintain a comfortable environment during highway cruising while preserving the character of the turbocharged flat-six engine.
Drivers can enjoy a refined exhaust experience with reduced reverberation, harshness, buzzing, and booming, along with a tasteful amount of burbling during deceleration. Outside the vehicle, the exhaust delivers a smooth, sophisticated tone with increased volume under acceleration while remaining relatively discreet during cruising.
Research & Development
The Porsche 992.2 Turbo S T-Hybrid utilizes an eTurbo turbocharger system that provides significant advantages over traditional turbocharger designs. To maintain sustained performance and an ideal air-fuel mixture ratio, Porsche employs a large exhaust diameter. Without assistance from the eTurbo, these larger exhaust flow cross-sections would result in significant turbo lag.
The electric motors drastically reduce the time required for the turbochargers to spool, allowing full boost pressure to become available quickly and helping the engine build torque almost immediately while maintaining the ideal air-fuel mixture ratio.
Despite the system's substantial exhaust flow potential, factory GPF filters and restrictive catalytic converters limit exhaust flow due to increasingly stringent sound and emissions regulations.
SOUL addressed these restrictions by increasing the average exhaust-pipe diameter from 2.75 inches to a minimum of 3.5 inches, incorporating custom high-flow SOUL catalytic converters, and eliminating the factory GPF filters. These modifications significantly increase exhaust flow capacity and support maximum performance potential.
Advanced XY-Pipe Engineering
The merging of both exhaust banks is critical to achieving the desired exhaust sound.
During development, SOUL determined that keeping the exhaust flow from both banks completely separate produced a harsh, tractor-like exhaust note. A traditional X-pipe improved exhaust tone by smoothing the sound, but additional refinement was necessary to achieve the desired Porsche exhaust character.
SOUL's fleet of 3D metal printers enabled the development of advanced exhaust designs with optimized internal flow paths and integrated sound-control features that would otherwise be difficult to manufacture.
Using detailed 3D scans of the factory exhaust system and vehicle underside, SOUL explored new ways to control exhaust flow and refine the exhaust note.
After thousands of miles of testing, including demanding Dragon Rally testing, and nine design revisions, SOUL developed its optimized XY-pipe.
Rather than simply crossing the two exhaust banks, the XY-pipe incorporates a shared central chamber with carefully calculated merge and bypass sections that allow a controlled amount of exhaust flow between both banks.
This innovative design produces a perfectly blended exhaust note that is smoother, more refined, robust, and higher-pitched, delivering an exhaust character befitting of Porsche.
Exhaust System Optimization & Anti-Drone Technology
Following successful digital flow simulations of the final XY-pipe design, SOUL completed the exhaust system by carefully replicating the factory GPF pressure differentials and oxygen sensor behavior.
This engineering approach helps minimize the potential for a check engine light (CEL) on otherwise untuned vehicles.
After achieving exceptional dyno results and optimizing the system's exhaust sound and tone, SOUL further refined the system using its extensive experience in Helmholtz chamber calculations.
