Description

Upgrade the airflow, turbo response, and overall performance of your Mercedes-AMG A45S, CLA45S, or GLA45S with the Infinity Design High-Performance Intake. Developed specifically for these high-output AMG applications, this intake follows the factory intake configuration while significantly optimizing airflow, reducing restriction, and maintaining controlled intake temperatures.

The system uses a single primary inlet designed around the factory air intake feed, which is more than capable of supplying adequate airflow even for Stage 3 hybrid turbo applications. An additional intake opening is incorporated on the right-hand side, positioned away from engine heat, to further improve airflow and performance.

Infinity Design's bespoke double-cone air filter features a massive 170 mm (6 3/4 inch) opening, allowing the turbocharger to draw in a maximum volume of air. The intake tube consists of a single Venturi tube designed to smooth and accelerate airflow, improving throttle response while increasing horsepower and torque.

The smoother and less restrictive intake design allows for faster turbocharger spool-up, further enhancing dynamic engine performance through significantly improved throttle response.

Intake Design

The Infinity Design intake is engineered around the factory intake setup, utilizing a single inlet positioned around the factory air intake feed. The factory feed is capable of delivering adequate airflow even to Stage 3 hybrid turbocharged vehicles.

An additional opening is positioned on the right-hand side of the intake system, away from the engine's primary heat sources. Testing has demonstrated improved performance from this additional airflow provision.

The intake uses a bespoke double-cone air filter with a substantial 170 mm (6 3/4 inch) opening. This large opening allows the turbocharger to draw in the maximum possible amount of air.

The intake tube is constructed around a single Venturi tube designed to smooth and accelerate airflow. By reducing the effort required by the engine and turbocharger to draw in air, the system helps increase horsepower and torque while improving throttle response.

The smoother and less restrictive airflow path also enables faster turbocharger spool-up times, contributing to enhanced dynamic engine performance and substantially improved throttle response.

CFD Analysis

As with all Infinity Design intake systems, this design was developed using computational fluid dynamics analysis (CFD).

CFD analysis demonstrated smooth, non-turbulent airflow through the system. The high-flow filter straightens the incoming air, allowing the Venturi inlet tube to draw in large quantities of air at high speed.

The filter and Venturi inlet tube work independently while complementing each other to create what is effectively the largest velocity stack of any intake system on the market.

Intake Temperatures

Many intake systems available on the market use open designs that allow high-temperature engine bay air to enter the intake system.

High intake temperatures can have two significant negative effects on engine performance.

First, hotter engine bay air is less dense and contains less oxygen, which naturally reduces the amount of oxygen available for combustion and can result in reduced power.

Second, the ECU detects increased intake air temperatures and can adjust its temperature compensation tables accordingly. This can reduce ignition timing and have a significant effect on power output, throttle response, and target boost.

This effect is often not clearly represented during dyno testing of open intake systems because many dyno tests are performed with the vehicle bonnet open, allowing additional airflow into the engine bay.

The Infinity Design intake has been meticulously designed to provide maximum airflow while creating a highly effective seal. This helps keep intake air temperatures as low as possible and supports consistent performance.

The enclosed design is engineered to prevent heat soak during operation.

Lower Duct

The oversized lower intake duct is designed to ensure that maximum amounts of cold, dense air enter the intake system. It also provides additional available air volume during sudden increases in airflow demand, taking full advantage of the space available within the engine bay.

The system incorporates Infinity Design's bespoke short-stack, high-surface-area air filter. The filter is larger than conventional cone filter designs and features a huge 170 mm (6 3/4 inch) opening.

The filter is designed to take full advantage of the intake tubes by altering the direction of airflow toward the outer walls. Positioning the air filter in front of the inlet tube allows the system to achieve the largest possible velocity stack.

Carbon Fiber Finish

Two carbon fiber finishes are available:

  • Gloss Carbon Fiber
  • Matte Carbon Fiber

The gloss carbon fiber finish is designed for customers who want the engine bay to stand out with a highly reflective appearance.

Performance Testing

Dyno testing was performed under strict controlled conditions at one of the UK's respected Mercedes tuning companies to provide a true and realistic performance comparison.

For testing, Infinity Design used a Stage 3 Mercedes-AMG vehicle equipped with a larger turbocharger, downpipe, and ECU tune producing more than 500 HP.

Testing with a higher-powered, tuned vehicle was specifically chosen to demonstrate the intake's capability and the additional airflow available when fitted to a high-performance application.

The intake produced a healthy and genuine increase of 14-18 HP from 5,200 RPM to 6,900 RPM.

Earlier turbocharger spool-up was also evident through increased low-end torque, as demonstrated by the dyno graphs.

Two separate tests were performed to provide consistency, with opposite correction factors showing both the minimum and maximum measured gains.
