Description
Upgrade your Volkswagen or Audi 2.0T EA888 Gen 4 engine with the APR PCV System Upgrade with Catch Can, designed to improve crankcase ventilation, maintain consistent crankcase vacuum, and provide enhanced oil separation under both factory and high-boost operating conditions.
Factory PCV System Limitations
The factory EA888 Gen 4 Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) system regulates crankcase pressure using a spring-loaded diaphragm, which is one of its most common failure points. Under heavy engine load, the factory system can struggle to maintain adequate vacuum, causing an internal bypass valve to open and allowing crankcase vapors to bypass the factory cyclone oil separator.
Modified and tuned engines operating at higher boost pressures generate increased blow-by, placing additional demands on the factory PCV components beyond their original design specifications.
APR PCV System Upgrade Design
The APR PCV System Upgrade replaces the factory spring-loaded diaphragm with calibrated static orifices that eliminate the diaphragm as a wear-related failure point.
Integrated one-way valves automatically direct crankcase and EVAP gases through the appropriate ventilation paths depending on engine operating conditions:
-
Off Boost: Crankcase and EVAP gases are routed into the intake manifold.
-
In Boost: Crankcase and EVAP gases are routed into the turbocharger inlet.
A less restrictive ventilation path to the turbocharger's suction jet pump provides nearly twice the factory crankcase vacuum at full boost, based on APR testing. This improved flow capacity helps accommodate the increased blow-by produced by tuned and high-performance engines.
The system retains every factory flow path and maintains factory crankcase pressure targets, keeping crankcase pressure negative during both engine coasting and boost operation.
Advanced Oil Separation and Catch Can Technology
The APR system incorporates a multi-stage oil separation design to improve crankcase vapor filtration and reduce oil carryover into the intake system.
Crankcase vapors pass through the following separation stages:
-
Engine Internal Baffles: The factory internal engine baffles provide the first stage of oil separation.
-
APR Billet Top Plate: An integrated impact surface captures fine oil particles from the crankcase vapors. Separated oil drains back into the engine sump.
-
APR Catch Can: Provides an additional stage of oil separation before the remaining crankcase vapors continue through the ventilation system.
Premium Materials and Construction
The APR PCV System Upgrade is engineered with high-quality materials designed to withstand demanding engine operating conditions.
-
Internal seals and one-way valves are designed in-house and manufactured from OEM-grade fluoroelastomer.
-
Fluoroelastomer components are rated for temperatures up to 430°F (221°C).
-
Internal seals and valves are compatible with all fuels, including ethanol.
-
PTFE-lined -10 AN hoses prevent oil and fuel vapor permeation.
-
Hose construction prevents oily or fuel vapor odors in the engine bay and resists degradation from ethanol vapor.
-
Billet aluminum catch can construction with an anodized black finish.
-
Twist-off catch can design for convenient servicing.
-
AN swivel hose connectors for secure hose connections.
Testing, Performance and Installation
APR validated the PCV System Upgrade through more than 1,000 miles of logged crankcase pressure data across five vehicles. Testing included daily commuting, highway driving, track days, and autocross conditions.
The system is designed to operate without ECU modifications or triggering a check engine light. It has been validated to satisfy every emissions parameter monitored by the vehicle's ECU.
Installation is DIY-friendly and takes approximately one hour at home, with professional installation taking approximately 30 minutes.
