Our latest research and development program focuses on enhancing the sound of the S55 exhaust, resulting in the Active Autowerke F80 M3 and F82 equal length mid-pipe (patent pending), an exceptional alternative to our renowned F8X single mid-pipe.
The inline 6 engine naturally produces a smooth and full sound due to evenly spaced exhaust pulses. However, the twin-turbo setup of the S55 engine, while generating additional power, has created a sound resembling two independent inline 3 engines competing for noise rather than the expected throaty tone. This issue arises from the significant difference in length between the front and rear downpipes, leading to unevenly spaced pulses. Whether using stock, x-pipes, double x-pipes, single mid-pipes, or rear-section solutions, these crossover sections inadvertently create a higher-pitched sound, often described as a weed eater sound. Through extensive research and testing conducted by BMW experts, we identified equalizing the length of the exhaust pipes before merging as the solution to this sound problem.
Initially, exhaust solutions focused on addressing the variance behind the differential housing. However, this approach posed a challenge in retaining existing rear exhaust systems. Leveraging our expertise in developing a single mid-pipe system for the F-series M cars, Active Autowerke directed our research and development resources towards creating the mid-pipe solution showcased here. We explored various methods, and while compensating for the difference in the rear section seemed logical, it would require a complete replacement of the rear exhaust system, which we understood many BMW owners would not prefer. Therefore, we decided to add length to the passenger side midpipe section and introduce a new crossover section to produce an exhaust note that has never been associated with the "S55 sound." Our patented solution employs sinusoidal pipes in the crossover, allowing us to correct the length variance in the downpipes before blending the sounds, resulting in the expected sporty 6-cylinder exhaust notes.
The Active Autowerke F8X Equal Length Mid Pipe is meticulously designed to ensure equal length exhaust pipes, accommodating the difference between the front and rear banks of the F80 M3 and F82 M4 downpipes before merging into an X-pipe. This unique configuration creates an exhaust note that distinguishes itself from the typical "S55 sound." Engineered for a precise fit on both the F80 M3 and F82 M4 models, the difference in sound with this mid pipe is immediately noticeable when the throttle is opened.
PLEASE NOTE: For vehicles equipped with catless (straight-through) downpipes, we strongly recommend using the resonator option in conjunction with the equal length midpipe for optimal performance.
