Description

Are you tired of experiencing one-wheel burnouts? The factory-installed open differential in your BMW 135i or 335i only delivers power to one wheel, limiting your car's performance. With the Wavetrac Limited-Slip Differential (LSD), you can finally distribute power to both rear wheels, significantly enhancing traction and overall handling.

Why Upgrade to Wavetrac LSD?

When cornering, your vehicle’s weight naturally shifts to the outside wheels, reducing traction on the inside wheel. An open differential will send power to the wheel with the least traction, often causing it to spin and lose grip mid-turn. The Wavetrac LSD solves this problem by distributing power evenly to both drive wheels, providing better traction and enabling you to accelerate more effectively out of corners. This upgrade is particularly crucial for anyone looking to improve lap times, as increased exit speed is a key factor in racing performance.

Whether you track your car or enjoy spirited driving on the streets, upgrading to the Wavetrac LSD will transform your BMW's driving dynamics. You’ll be amazed at the increased traction and control, even in everyday driving situations.

Differential Compatibility and Installation Options

For early 335i models (up to 03/2007), the rear differential was bolted, allowing for a straightforward swap to an aftermarket LSD. However, post-03/2007 models and all 135i models have welded ring gears, complicating differential upgrades. Wavetrac offers a specialized service to modify your factory-welded differential, making it compatible with their LSDs. The welded ring gear is carefully CNC machined to separate and modify it for Wavetrac installation. Refer to the chart below to determine if an installation kit is required for your model.

Automatic transmissions built after 09/2007 feature a bolted differential and do not require an installation kit. All 135i models with manual transmissions, however, feature welded differentials, making Wavetrac's modification service essential.

Core Exchange Program

Installing any LSD requires expertise, but Wavetrac makes the process more accessible by offering pre-installed LSDs within a complete rear differential assembly. Our core exchange program provides a ready-to-install solution—simply swap out your old differential for the new assembly. This minimizes downtime and eliminates the need to ship your differential back and forth for installation. A refundable $800 core charge is applied, returned to you once we receive your original differential. If you choose to have the LSD installed at our facility, the core charge is waived with an immediate exchange.

Final Drive Ratio Options

The manual transmission's rear differential features a 3.08 final drive ratio, while the automatic transmission uses a shorter 3.46 ratio. The shorter gear ratio enhances acceleration at the cost of a lower top speed, but it offers significant benefits in performance scenarios where top speed is less critical. We offer the Wavetrac LSD pre-installed in a brand-new automatic rear differential assembly with a 3.46 final drive. This complete assembly does not require a core exchange, allowing you to retain your original differential as a spare or sell it as a complete unit. We use this setup in our 135i Time Attack race car, and it's available for those interested in maximizing their BMW's acceleration capabilities.

Recommended Differential Oil and Axle Seals

For optimal performance, we recommend using Motul Gear300 75W90 gear oil, which we use in our race cars. BMW's factory gear oil is also suitable, but avoid oils with LSD additives. When installing the LSD, it’s essential to replace the axle seals. We use genuine BMW axle seals, and you have the option to have them installed during the LSD installation process. If you opt out, you'll need to install them yourself.

Elevate your driving experience with the Wavetrac LSD—whether on the track or the street, you’ll notice a dramatic improvement in traction, cornering, and overall performance.

How can I tell what the build date is on my car?  There is a sticker on the door jam with the build date.
