In its stock configuration, the F8x (S55) platform demonstrated a clear need for enhanced cooling to maximize performance. The OEM cooling system suffers from heat soak after just three consecutive pulls, resulting in dangerously elevated engine air intake temperatures (IAT). To prevent detonation, the engine control unit (ECU) is forced to reduce engine power. However, with the Dinan high-performance heat exchanger, heat soak is effectively eliminated, even after seven consecutive pulls, making it more than twice as effective as the stock setup.

You may wonder why the heat exchanger is targeted instead of the intercooler itself. While addressing the charge air source directly seems beneficial, it comes at a higher cost. The stock system employs a water-to-air intercooler, a complex and expensive component to engineer. The cooling circuit responsible for supplying water to the intercooler consists of a primary cooler (heat exchanger) and a smaller secondary cooler located in front of the passenger side wheel. After extensive testing of these three components, it was determined that replacing the heat exchanger with a larger unit offered the most cost-effective performance solution.

Dedicated testing and optimization of the heat exchanger led to the creation of the refined design offered by Dinan. With a 60% increase in volume and a 19% larger face area compared to the stock unit, combined with an impressive 40mm thickness (as opposed to the stock 24mm), the advantages of the improved setup become immediately apparent. Although the core could have been made thicker, the decision to prioritize airflow requirements for the main radiator, located directly behind the heat exchanger, was crucial. A thicker core would impede airflow and compromise overall engine cooling, potentially leading to long-term engine health issues. The increased physical stature of the heat exchanger results in an average 9°C reduction in water temperatures to the intercooler across the entire RPM range. The colder water entering the intercooler significantly enhances its efficiency, leading to an average additional 6°C cooling of the intake air compared to the stock unit. This reduction in intake air temperature translates into an impressive power gain of +10 HP and +20 ft-lb of torque without requiring any changes to the engine tune. Moreover, when paired with the stage 3 DINANTRONICS Performance Tuner (where applicable), the cooling capabilities unlock even more significant power gains.
